Taking stock

So the garden has been nearly cleared and I figure it's time to take stock of what we have in there, what's worth keeping and what needs to be composted. :)

Like I said, the garden is in two parts, and for want of names, I'm going to call them the Left-Hand Side (LHS) garden and the Right-Hand Side (RHS) garden (geek!).

The layout of the RHS garden looks something like the diagram below. This is not to scale, I need to get the dimensions. I've roughly marked the placement of the different trees/shrubs as they are currently placed. The 'X's are the yet-to-be-identified plants.

Here's an inventory of the plants/shrubs/trees we already have in the two gardens. These are some of the main plants growing here.

The tall white wall I was talking about is visible in this photo.

Ficus-White Cloud

Unidentified palms

Pretty arched window behind the palms

Sago Palm

Frangipani tree

Teak tree

Coconut

There are a few very beautiful Ixora bushes that are currently in bloom

Croton

Besides these, there are a couple of unidentified pink flowering trees and some Bougainvilla shrubs too.

Today the garden has been cleared up; the grass has been cut in the RHS garden, and the soil has been tilled in the LHS garden. And it started raining after all was done!!!

The first post

Several firsts in the last fortnight. Add another - first blog.

So this blog is driven by my first little gardening project. We've moved into a new office building (a change from the rented offices we've been inhabiting). It has a patch each on the left and right of the building, both of which are currently overgrown. They look like they have been neglected for some months. Also, now that we are at the fag end of the monsoon season (all the humidity and moisture would even sprout a few hair on a bald-man's pate) one can just barely see the plants from the weeds. (It feels like we've had more rain this year in Goa than the last 4 monsoons I've witnessed. The normal rainfall in Goa is supposed to be between 300cm-325cm (120-130 inches). So far we've gotten 319cm (or 127 inches) of rain, but it feels like it's been a lot more).

I want to record the activities in the garden through pictures and words on this blog. The attempt is to make the garden as organic as we possibly can. I say 'we' coz I'm not the only one involved in this project - as of now. Let's see who lasts and how long. :) Me included.
I want to plant vegetables, herbs, and flowers. We'll find out what the others want to plan.

We've taken help to get the garden cleaned - Shainappa and his team claim to be able to do it in 3 days.

So enough of words for now - here are some pictures of how the garden looks at present. Let's see how it shapes up.

can all this be composted?
